Pubwatch awards - Fox & Hounds
Report By Laura Herbert Courtesy of The Evening Post There's nothing like a pint in the traditional, warm and friendly Fox & Hounds pub according to two of its regulars. Both Lynn Bayliss and Scott Lovell have nominated the Tilehurst boozer in the Traditional Pub of the Year category in this year’s Reading Pubwatch Awards. Join the Pubwatch awards facebook group here For three years the town’s boozers, bar staff, live music and best traditional pub have been recognised in the Evening Post-sponsored awards. Mrs Bayliss, 57, of City Road, Tilehurst, called the pub “the heart of the community”. She said: “Julie Collins and Gary Silk are the licensees who run a very successful local pub that is the heart of the community. "They are constantly coming up with ideas to put on entertaining events, many of which include fundraising events for local charities. "One of the highlights is the annual pickled onion competition where locals enter their home-made pickled onions.” She said: “Julie and Gary run a very home-from-home pub, they are always interested in what is going on in the neighbourhood and have time for everyone. "They operate a zero tolerance attitude to drugs and violence which makes for a comfortable, safe and happy environment to spend a relaxing evening.” The Fox & Hounds is no stranger to the annual awards, as the City Road pub has won the best traditional pub award for the past two years. Fellow nominator Scott Lovell, of Mead Close, in Tilehurst, said: “The Fox & Hounds is a friendly local pub which retains a traditional pub atmosphere with a comfortable charm.
